Job Profile

The Senior Geotechnical / Structural Engineer is the technical expert on all civil/geotechnical and structural engineering activities that arise throughout the entire lifecycle of a project, from bid to commissioning. This position acts as a subject matter expert on foundation/piling design and shoring wall design.

Job Duties

  • Provide technical guidance and professional development to junior staff including engineers, technicians, and draftsperson(s)
  • Design of Helical Piles, Steel and Concrete Driven Piles, CIP, CFA
  • Design of shoring systems (Sheet piles – Soldier pile and Lagging)
  • Design of steel frames, walers and bracings for sheet pile vaults, concrete caps, etc.
  • Maintain professional permits and licensing of applicable regulatory and professional associations
  • Manage and/or review projects from the proposal stage through to completion, including allocation of budgets, personnel and resources and client relationships
  • Coordinate with project management teams and other discipline leads to manage project deliverables, ensuring schedule and budget are achieved
  • Maintain and develop client relations
  • Maintain technical proficiency, including participation in professional practice groups and organizations
  • Serve as foundations technical matter expert in design and point of contact for all matters related to foundation engineering
  • Act as engineer of record
  • Assess projects to determine requirements
  • Provide excellent customer service and a commitment to technical excellence
  • Prepare drawings and schematic designs based on project requirements
  • Study and assess drawings, plans, specifications, and other documents relating to construction projects
  • Collaborate and interact with construction teams, outside project developers and consultants
  • Initiate and ensure standard civil engineering discipline in drawings and plans including geotechnical, civil, and structural analyses
  • Work with staff and consultants creating and validating design alternatives with the help of various design software
  • Interacts and provides support to the design staff to ensure designs are appropriate, compatible, and safe
  • Support Estimators, Technical Services Specialists and Operations personnel in managing and executing multiple tasks and projects
  • Responsible for providing training and work guidance to applicable stakeholders, while continuing to perform the day-to-day activities of the position
  • Responsibilities and objectives are assigned with considerable autonomy for decision-making using technical, professional, or business standards and ethics. Work may be periodically reviewed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Geotechnical Engineering
  • Registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and any other jurisdictions are an asset
  • Postgraduate degree (in Geotechnical or Structural discipline) is an asset
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience and demonstrated management of projects related to design and installation of foundation / shoring projects
  • Experience with concrete design would be an asset
  • Project Management skills are necessary, with an ability to track timelines, meet budgets, and schedules
  • Demonstrated ability developing excellent customer relationships, positive staff working environments and developing new business opportunities
  • Strong workplace safety practices and training
  • Strong communication and report writing skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills
